Library Services

Loan Periods & Limits

Books

  • Tusculum Faculty/ Staff- books will circulate for 90 days.
  • Tusculum students & Community Patrons- books will circulate for 21 days

Book Borrowing Limits

  • A borrowing limit of 20 books at a time is set for Tusculum University Faculty, Staff, and Students.
  • A borrowing limit of 5 books at a time for Community Patrons.
  • Limits may also vary based on shelving locations for some items.

Renewals

Books may be renewed a total of 2 times, if not on hold or recalled, but must be physically returned to library by the due dates.

DVDs

  • Tusculum Faculty/ Staff & Students- DVDs will circulate for a period of 7 days and may be renewed at the library.
    •  Borrowing limit of five (5) DVDs per person at a time.
  • Community Patrons may not borrow library DVDs.

Recalls/Holds

  •  Recall period- items should be returned within two (2) days of a recall notification
  •  Hold period- items will be on hold for seven (7) days after notification. Afterwards, they will be re-shelved or sent back a lending library.

Notices will be emailed to your TU email account. For Community patrons, notices will be emailed to provided email accounts.

Bill notices are processed daily at 7.am. Overdue notices process based on item due dates.

  • First Due Notice- emailed two days before item(s) comes due, to remind you of your item(s) due date.
  • Second Due Notice- emailed day of item(s) due date.
  • Third Overdue Notice- emailed one day after item(s) become overdue.
  • Fourth Notice (Bill)- emailed once item(s) replacement costs have been charged to account.
  • The Garland Library has 16 computer workstations available for information retrieval. To access the computers in the library, all users are required to log in using the university provided personal username and password. To receive your username and password, please contact the TU Helpdesk at 636-7346 or ext. 5346 on campus. Due to the limited number of workstations, priority for computer use will be given to current TU students doing research and classwork or involved in a library instruction session exercise requiring computer use. Computers reserved for class use will be posted as such and individual students will be asked to surrender the workstations during such times.
  • Community users with a valid TU Community Borrower's card may obtain access to use the library computers in the Commons area by registering at the circulation desk. Community users may be asked to surrender workstations as deemed necessary by library staff to accommodate TU students use. The workstations are available during library operating hours unless reserved for class purposes.
  • Printing is available at a cost of 10 cents per page for black and white or 25 cents for color. Printouts can be picked up at the Circulation Desk. For color printing, please bring a flash drive with the file to be printed to the Circulation desk.

Laptop Loan

The library has several laptops that can be loaned out to students, faculty and staff for up to four hours at a time. These laptops are for use in the library only and may not leave the building. Please bring your Tusculum identification card when you check out a laptop. All users are required to sign a responsibility form (available at the Circulation Desk) before being loaned a laptop. ID cards will be held at the Circulation desk until the laptop is returned.

Wireless Network

  • Both TU Student and Staff wireless networks are accessible in the library.
  • For students and users that wish to print to the library’s printer from their own laptop, they should see a staff member at the Circulation desk for instructions.
  • Students and users needing assistance troubleshooting a wireless connection using their personal laptops should contact the TU Helpdesk for assistance at 423-636-7300 ext. 5346 or email: tuhelp@tusculum.edu.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services provided by the Thomas J. Garland Library enable students, faculty, and staff of Tusculum University the opportunity to borrow books and obtain photocopies of journal articles from other institutions when the material is not available at the TU Library.

Users of this service should note:

  • The average waiting period for receipt of requested book materials is 2 weeks. The average waiting period for receipt of a journal article is 3 to 7 days. Garland Library will make every effort to ensure that notification of the receipt of requested materials are made to borrowers as soon as possible.

Interlibrary Loan Request Form 

  • Books may be picked up at the Greeneville library location unless other arrangements are made. For alternative delivery options please call (423) 636-7320. All borrowed books must be returned to Garland Library in Greeneville by the indicated due date.
  • Articles may be picked up at the library locations above, sent via U.S. Postal mail, or emailed to the patron upon request. Any photocopy and lender fees must be paid upon receipt of the materials by the requestor.

PLEASE NOTE: The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose except private study, scholarship or research." If a user makes a request for or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law. This may apply to software and other non-print formats as well.

ILL Lending Charges

Borrowers will assume costs that lending libraries may charge for requested items. If the cost is above the allowable amount indicated on the borrower's form, a librarian will contact the borrower for permission and verification that the borrower will pay for the additional fee before continuing to process the request. If a borrower is unwilling to pay additional fees, the library reserves the right to cancel a request or to explore alternative methods of obtaining the material within the cost parameters provided by the borrower.

Users requesting Interlibrary Loans will be made aware of their responsibility for the borrowed material and assumption of all replacement costs if the material is overdue, lost, or damaged.
